What to see

The main building, with its Mabeyn (reception) and Harem sections, combines Western and Ottoman taste: Egyptian straw matting on the floors, Hereke carpets, Bohemian and Baccarat chandeliers, and a pool hall on the ground floor. Empress Eugénie and Emperor Franz Joseph stayed here; the deposed Sultan Abdülhamid II spent his last years here and died in 1918.

Visits of the main building take about an hour; the terraced gardens have their own cheaper ticket. The garden kiosks are closed to visitors.

The palace is closed on Mondays. It pairs well with Kuzguncuk, a 20-minute walk south along the shore.

Buses from Üsküdar along the shore road stop at Beylerbeyi; it is about 30 minutes on foot from Üsküdar ferry pier.
