About Ankara

Ankara was a small Anatolian town until Atatürk made it the capital in 1923; most of the city is modern, planned and busy with ministries and universities. The old core is the hill of the castle, where the Ottoman quarter, the Arslanhane Mosque and the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations sit within a few minutes' walk.

Anıtkabir, Atatürk's mausoleum, is the city's other essential sight. Outside the capital, the Phrygian capital Gordion and the hill town of Beypazarı make easy day trips.

Is Ankara worth visiting?

For a day or two, yes — above all for the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations, which makes sense of every ancient site on the plateau, and for Anıtkabir. The castle quarter is a pleasant surprise.

It is not a city of grand old streets like Istanbul. It works best as a stop between Istanbul and Cappadocia, or as a base for Gordion and Hattuşa.

Best for
Museum lovers, travellers interested in modern Turkish history, people on the way to Cappadocia or Hattuşa.
How long
1–2 days.
Getting there
Ankara Esenboğa airport has flights from across Türkiye and Europe; high-speed trains run from Istanbul, Eskişehir and Konya, and buses from everywhere. General directions, not checked against timetables.

Best time to go Apr–Jun · Sep–Oct

Spring and autumn are pleasant for walking the old quarter. Summers are hot and dry, winters cold and grey, but the museums work in any season.
