What to see

A long avenue lined with stone lions leads to a vast ceremonial square and the colonnaded Hall of Honour, where the symbolic sarcophagus stands; the museum beneath covers Atatürk's personal belongings and the War of Independence in large panoramas.

Allow about two hours with the museum. The changing of the guard and the quiet discipline of the place are part of the experience; behave as at any memorial.

Expect large crowds on national holidays, especially 29 October and 10 November. Security checks are made at the entrance.

In Çankaya, west of Kızılay; the Tandoğan and Anadolu–Anıtkabir stations of the Ankara metro are nearest to the entrances.
