About Marmaris

Marmaris is the big name here: a resort town in a deep bay, a marina full of yachts and gulets, and boats every morning to coves that roads do not reach. West of it the Datça peninsula stretches for some seventy kilometres, with almond groves, small villages and the ancient city of Knidos at its tip.

East, the river at Dalyan winds through reed beds past the rock-cut tombs of Kaunos to İztuzu, a sand bar where sea turtles nest. North, Akyaka on the Gulf of Gökova is a laid-back village of timber-balconied houses beside a crystal-clear stream.

Is Marmaris worth visiting?

Marmaris itself is a lively package resort rather than a historic town, but as a base it is excellent: boat days in the coves, and Datça, Knidos, Dalyan and Akyaka all within reach. Travellers who prefer quiet often stay in Datça, Dalyan or Akyaka instead.

Three to five days lets you do a boat trip, the Dalyan river and a long day out to Knidos. It suits beach lovers, sailors and families; history lovers will want at least Kaunos and Knidos.

Best for
Beach and boat lovers, families, sailors, travellers who want quiet coves with some ruins.
How long
3–5 days.
Getting there
Dalaman airport is about 95 km from Marmaris and 25 km from Dalyan; Bodrum airport is an alternative for Datça by the seasonal ferry. Buses link Marmaris with Muğla, Fethiye and İzmir. General directions, not checked against timetables.

Best time to go May–Jun · Sep–Oct

Late spring and early autumn are warm, with a sea pleasant for swimming and fewer crowds. July and August are hot and busy; many hotels and boats close from November to April.
