About Safranbolu

Safranbolu grew rich as a stop on the caravan route and its merchants built hundreds of timber-framed mansions, many of which survive in the Çarşı quarter and the greener Bağlar district. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most complete Ottoman towns anywhere.

Amasra, about 90 minutes north, is a small peninsula town with Genoese walls and two bays. East of Safranbolu, the Kastamonu area has the painted village mosque of Kasaba and the canyons of the Küre Mountains National Park.

Is Safranbolu worth visiting?

Yes — it is the classic Ottoman town, easy to reach from Istanbul or Ankara, and best experienced by staying overnight in one of the restored mansions.

One night is enough for the town; two or three with Amasra and the Kastamonu side trip.
