About Bursa

Bursa was the Ottomans' first real capital, and its early mosques, tombs and market inns are the most complete group of fourteenth- and fifteenth-century Ottoman buildings anywhere; together with the village of Cumalıkızık they form a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It is also a big modern city with a car industry, so the historic sights come in clusters: the bazaar quarter around the Grand Mosque, the Yeşil quarter to the east, and the thermal suburb of Çekirge to the west. Uludağ rises straight above, and lakeside İznik is an hour and a half away.

Is Bursa worth visiting?

Yes, especially if you like Ottoman architecture, markets and food — this is the home of İskender kebab and candied chestnuts. The Grand Mosque, the Green Mosque and Koza Han can all be seen in one day.

A day trip from Istanbul is possible but rushed; one night lets you add Cumalıkızık and the cable car, two nights İznik as well.

Best for
Architecture and history lovers, food travellers, families looking for a mountain day.
How long
1–2 days.
Getting there
From Istanbul, fast ferries cross to Yalova or Mudanya and buses continue to Bursa, or take a direct bus around the gulf; Bursa's city buses and tram link the sights. General directions, not checked against timetables.

Best time to go Apr–Jun · Sep–Oct

Spring and autumn are pleasant for walking the old quarters. Summers are warm and humid in the city but cool on Uludağ; in winter the mountain becomes a ski resort.
