About Amasya

Amasya was the capital of the Kingdom of Pontus and later a training ground for Ottoman princes. The Yeşilırmak river runs through a steep gorge, with the old timber houses on one bank and the tombs of the kings cut into the cliff above them.

It is a small, walkable town with Ottoman mosques, a hamam and several house museums; the view of the lit tombs at night is its signature image.

Is Amasya worth visiting?

Yes, for a night: it is one of the most picturesque small towns in northern Anatolia, and easy to combine with Hattuşa or the Black Sea coast.

There is not enough for a long stay; one full day and an evening is the right amount.

Best for
Slow travellers, photographers, road-trippers between Hattuşa and Samsun.
How long
1 day.
Getting there
Buses from Ankara, Samsun and Çorum; Amasya–Merzifon airport is about 45 km away. General directions, not checked against timetables.

Best time to go Apr–Jun · Sep–Oct

Spring and autumn are best; the gorge can be hot in midsummer and cold and foggy in winter. Apples are harvested in autumn.
