About Konya

Konya was the capital of the Seljuk Sultanate of Rum and became the home of Jalal al-Din Rumi, whose followers founded the order of the whirling dervishes. His green-tiled tomb still draws pilgrims from all over the Muslim world, and the city keeps a pious, unhurried air.

Around Alaeddin Hill stand the best Seljuk buildings, now museums of tiles and stone carving. Out on the plain, Çatalhöyük shows how people lived nine thousand years ago; Lake Beyşehir and its wooden mosque lie to the west.

Is Konya worth visiting?

Yes, for the Mevlana Museum and the Seljuk monuments, and as the gateway to Çatalhöyük. A full day covers the city; add a second for Çatalhöyük and Beyşehir.

It is a conservative city with little nightlife; it pairs well with Cappadocia, about three hours away by road.

Best for
Travellers interested in Sufism and Islamic art, archaeology lovers, people crossing between the coast and Cappadocia.
How long
1–2 days.
Getting there
High-speed trains from Istanbul and Ankara; Konya airport has domestic flights; buses to Cappadocia and Antalya. General directions, not checked against timetables.

Best time to go Apr–Jun · Sep–Oct · Dec

Spring and autumn are comfortable. In December the city fills for the anniversary of Rumi's death, when whirling ceremonies are held nightly — book well ahead.
