About Edirne

Edirne, ancient Adrianople, was the Ottoman capital for nearly a century before Istanbul. Its three great mosques — the Old Mosque, Üç Şerefeli and the Selimiye — show in one walk how Ottoman architects learned to build ever larger domes.

The Tunca and Meriç rivers loop around the town, crossed by Ottoman stone bridges; on an island in the Tunca, Sarayiçi hosts the Kırkpınar oil-wrestling tournament every summer. The border crossings to Greece and Bulgaria are minutes away.

Is Edirne worth visiting?

Yes, for the Selimiye alone — many consider it the finest Ottoman mosque — and for a relaxed provincial town with good food (try the fried liver) and riverside cafés.

A long day trip from Istanbul is possible; one night is better. It also makes a natural first or last stop for travellers crossing the land border with Bulgaria or Greece.

Best for
Architecture lovers, overland travellers, anyone wanting a quiet day away from Istanbul.
How long
1 day, or 1 night.
Getting there
Buses from Istanbul take about 2½–3 hours; Edirne bus station is outside the centre, with city buses and taxis into town. General directions, not checked against timetables.

Best time to go Apr–Jun · Sep–Oct

Spring and autumn are ideal. Summer is hot; late June or early July, when Kırkpınar is held, is busy and rooms fill fast. Winters are cold and foggy by the rivers.
