About Urla

Urla and Seferihisar fill the neck of the peninsula between İzmir and Çeşme: olive groves, vineyards and small coves, with two cities of the Ionian League among them. At Klazomenai, on the shore at Urla İskele, archaeologists found Anatolia's oldest known olive-oil workshop, 2,600 years old and now rebuilt; Teos, near Sığacık, was the city of Dionysus, with one of the great Ionic temples of the Hellenistic age.

Sığacık is a fishing village that grew inside old castle walls, now with guesthouses, a marina and seafood restaurants; Seferihisar belongs to the Cittaslow (slow city) network. The coast around Sığacık and Urla has several Blue Flag beaches, Akkum among them.

Are Urla and Sığacık worth visiting?

Yes, if you like your history with a long lunch: two Ionian cities with few visitors, a village by the water and good olive oil and wine country. It is an easy trip from İzmir and a gentler alternative to the busy resorts of Çeşme.

You will want a car — the sights are spread out and public transport between them is limited.

Best for
History lovers, food and wine travellers, couples; families for the beaches.
How long
1–2 days (or a day trip from İzmir).
Getting there
From İzmir by car along the motorway towards Çeşme (for Urla) or the coast road (for Seferihisar); İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport is the nearest airport. General directions, not checked against timetables.

Best time to go Apr–Jun · Sep–Oct

Spring and autumn suit the ancient sites, which have little shade. July and August are the beach months and the busiest time.
