What to see

The agora was rebuilt after a great earthquake in the second century AD. Re-erected columns of the colonnade line one side of the square; below the basilica runs a basement of arches and vaults that you can walk through. An agora was a city's market place and its political and religious centre at once.

Forty-five minutes to an hour; combine it with Kemeraltı bazaar a few streets away.

The basement is cool on hot days; the open square has little shade.

Getting there

In the Namazgah quarter of Konak, central İzmir, a walk uphill from Kemeraltı. From Urla it is about 34 km in a straight line — by bus or car into the city.
