About Hattuşa

Hattuşa was the capital of one of the great powers of the Bronze Age, rival to Egypt and Babylon; the clay archives found here include a copy of the world's earliest known peace treaty. The ruins cover a whole landscape of ridges and gorges above the village of Boğazkale.

The site, Yazılıkaya and Alacahöyük are together a UNESCO World Heritage area and fit into one full day. Boğazkale has a few simple hotels; Çorum is the nearest city.

Is Hattusa worth visiting?

Yes, if ancient history is your thing: the Lion Gate, the tunnel of Yerkapı and the reliefs of Yazılıkaya are unforgettable, and you will share them with few other visitors.

It is remote — about three hours by road from Ankara or Cappadocia — so plan a night nearby or a long day with a car.

Best for
Archaeology and ancient-history lovers, road-trippers between Ankara and the Black Sea.
How long
1 day, ideally with a night in Boğazkale or Çorum.
Getting there
By car from Ankara or Cappadocia; by bus to Sungurlu or Çorum and then taxi. There is no public transport around the site. General directions, not checked against timetables.
