About Bergama

Pergamon was the capital of the Attalid kings from the third century BC and later the capital of the Roman province of Asia. Its acropolis, built in terraces on a steep hill above modern Bergama, held the Altar of Zeus, a celebrated library and the steepest theatre of antiquity; below it lay the Asklepion, one of the great healing sanctuaries of the ancient world, and in the plain the huge brick temple now called the Red Basilica. Together with the Ottoman town around them, they have formed a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014.

Thirty kilometres west, Dikili was Pergamon's port and still has a harbour and long sandy beaches; Çandarlı, ancient Pitane, keeps one of the best-preserved medieval castles in the country. Further south, Foça stands on the site of Phokaia, the Ionian city whose sailors founded colonies across the Mediterranean.

Is Bergama worth visiting?

Yes: Pergamon is one of the most important ancient sites in Türkiye and far quieter than Ephesus. The acropolis and the Asklepion together fill a day, and the coast of Dikili, Çandarlı and Foça adds a relaxed few days by the sea.

The sights are spread out — the two Pergamon sites are on opposite sides of town and Foça is more than an hour's drive from Bergama — so a car makes it much easier.

Best for
History lovers above all; couples and families who want a quiet Aegean coast.
How long
1 day for Pergamon; 2–3 days with the coast.
Getting there
By road from İzmir (about 110 km to Bergama) or from Ayvalık to the north; İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport is the nearest airport. Dikili is a port of entry, and many visitors to Pergamon arrive there by sea. General directions, not checked against timetables.

Best time to go Apr–Jun · Sep–Oct

Spring and autumn suit the open, shadeless ancient sites. July and August are for the beaches and are hot on the acropolis.
