What to see

Pergamon grew from the third century BC as the capital of the Attalid dynasty and was built in terraces, because the steep hill had no level ground. Under Eumenes II it gained the Altar of Zeus, raised to mark a victory over the Galatians, the gateway and porticoes of the Temple of Athena, a library said to have held some 200,000 scrolls, a palace and new city walls. The theatre, cut into the slope for about 10,000 spectators, is the steepest of antiquity; the Temple of Trajan was added in Roman times.

Allow two to three hours for the upper city, the theatre terrace and the walk down past the gymnasium terraces. An audio guide is available.

The hill is exposed and hot in summer: come early, with water and good shoes.
