About Samsun & Sinop

The central Black Sea is less scenic than the east, but its cities are pleasant stops on a coast trip. Sinop sits on a peninsula with a fortress, a fishing harbour and quiet beaches; its old prison is now a museum.

Samsun is a large port with a long seafront where Mustafa Kemal landed in 1919. Ordu, further east, is backed by hazelnut hills, with the Boztepe viewpoint above the town and the yaylas of the interior behind.

Is Sinop worth visiting?

Sinop is the most attractive of the three, with its walled harbour, the prison museum and nearby bays; one or two nights are enough.

Samsun and Ordu are best seen in passing on a coastal road trip between Sinop and Trabzon.

Best for
Road-trippers following the coast, history lovers, travellers who like quiet seaside towns.
How long

Getting there
