What to see
The sanctuary existed from the fourth century BC and reached its height in the second century AD. A sacred way led from the city to a colonnaded court; around it stood a 3,500-seat theatre, a library, a hall of the emperor cult and a round Temple of Asklepios modelled on the Pantheon in Rome, built around AD 150. A long underground passage runs from the sacred spring, and the orator Aelius Aristides, who stayed here for thirteen years, described the treatments of the time.
One to one and a half hours; walk the colonnaded sacred way and go down into the underground passage.
Allow time for both Pergamon sites in one day; they are on opposite sides of town.
