About Trabzon

Trabzon is the gateway to the eastern Black Sea: an airport, a lively centre around Meydan square and the Uzun Sokak shopping street, and the remains of the walled town of the Komnenian emperors. The Hagia Sophia church-mosque stands above the sea on the western side.

The real draws are inland. Sümela Monastery hangs on its cliff in the Altındere valley south of Maçka, and Uzungöl, a lake village of wooden hotels under steep forested slopes, lies about two hours east. The Zigana pass on the old caravan road to Iran is a winter ski area.

Is Trabzon worth visiting?

Yes, mainly as a base for Sümela and Uzungöl, which are the two most famous sights of the eastern Black Sea. The city itself deserves half a day.

Two to three days is a good length: one for Sümela and the city, one for Uzungöl, and a spare day for weather, which changes quickly here.

Best for
Nature and history lovers, travellers heading on to Rize and the Kaçkar mountains.
How long
2–3 days.
Getting there
Trabzon airport has frequent flights from Istanbul and Ankara and is next to the city; buses and tours go to Sümela (via Maçka) and Uzungöl (via Of and Çaykara). General directions, not checked against timetables.

Best time to go May–Jun · Sep–Oct

Late spring and early autumn are green and less crowded. July and August bring warm weather but also the domestic holiday rush, especially at Uzungöl. Winter is wet on the coast and snowy in the mountains; Sümela can then be foggy or icy.
