What to see

Nineteenth-century apartment blocks, embassies turned consulates, churches and arcades line the street. Look into the side passages such as Çiçek Pasajı, the Catholic church of St Anthony of Padua and the Galatasaray school gates halfway down.

Walk it end to end in half an hour, or spend an afternoon with the side streets of Cihangir, Galatasaray and Asmalımescit. It continues downhill to Galata Tower.

It is crowded from late afternoon, especially at weekends. Watch your bag in the crowds.

Getting there

Start at Taksim (M2 metro, F1 funicular from Kabataş) and walk down, or ride the Tünel funicular up from Karaköy to the other end.
