What to see

Dolmabahçe was built in the 1850s and shows how the late Ottoman court looked to Europe for its taste. The state rooms of the Selamlık lead to the vast ceremonial hall under a huge chandelier; the Harem wing holds the private apartments, including the room where Atatürk died in 1938.

Visits to the main palace are guided along a fixed route; allow about two hours for the Selamlık and the Harem, plus time for the Painting Museum in the former crown prince's wing.

The palace is closed on Mondays. Come early on weekdays, and keep the waterfront garden and the Clock Museum for the end of the visit.

Getting there

The palace is a short walk along the shore from Kabataş (end of the T1 tram line, ferries and the F1 funicular) and from Beşiktaş ferry pier.
