What to see

Built under Theodosius II, the walls combine a moat, an outer wall and a taller inner wall with nearly a hundred towers. Some stretches are restored, others crumbling; gates such as Edirnekapı and Topkapı mark where Mehmed II's army broke through in 1453.

Walk a section — Edirnekapı to the Golden Horn passes Chora and the Palace of the Porphyrogenitus — in one or two hours. The full length is a half-day walk along busy roads.

Stay on paths and pavements: the walls are not safe to climb, and some stretches are isolated, so walk them in daylight.

Getting there

Edirnekapı is served by buses from Eminönü and Taksim; Topkapı by the T1 tram; the Marmara end at Yedikule by Marmaray (Kazlıçeşme).
