What to see

The first mosque here was built soon after the Ottoman conquest of 1453; the present building dates from around 1800. The tomb across the courtyard, lined with tiles, draws a steady stream of pilgrims, and the streets around it are full of old cemeteries and small shops.

Allow an hour, more if you also walk or ride the cable car up to Pierre Loti Hill. This is a place of prayer: dress modestly, women cover their hair, and be quiet around the tomb.

Fridays and religious holidays are very busy; weekday mornings are calmest.

Getting there

Golden Horn ferries from Karaköy and Üsküdar stop at Eyüp; buses run from Eminönü. The T5 tram also serves the area.
