What to see

The cistern is thought to date from the reign of Theodosius II and once stored water for the old city. Today you walk among its lit marble columns under the brick vaults; it is a much smaller space than the Basilica Cistern nearby.

Twenty to thirty minutes — an easy stop between Hagia Sophia and the Grand Bazaar.

The operator's own pages give two different closing times (18:00 and 22:00) and two different prices for Turkish citizens; check on the day before planning a late visit.

Getting there

On Piyer Loti Caddesi in the Binbirdirek quarter, a few minutes on foot from the Çemberlitaş and Sultanahmet stops of the T1 tram.

Transport lines are general directions, not checked against the operator's timetable.

Nearest rail & tram stops

  • T1 Çemberlitaş in Turkish Tram stop ~150 m~3 min walk (estimate)
  • Marmaray Sirkeci in Turkish Suburban rail station ~800 m~14 min walk (estimate)

Straight-line distance; the walking time adds a rough allowance for detours. Stops on operating lines only (OpenStreetMap, via ilçemde, our sister directory); station pages open on ilçemde and show what is around each station (in Turkish — names, phone numbers and map work in any language).
