What to see

The cistern once stored water for the Great Palace of the Byzantine emperors. Walkways lead between rows of recycled columns to the two Medusa heads used as column bases in the far corner, and art installations often appear among the arches.

A visit takes 30 to 45 minutes. It is cool inside even in August, which makes it a good midday stop between the big monuments of Sultanahmet.

Queues build up from late morning; arrive at opening time or late in the day. Check the operator's site before you go, as evening sessions and special programmes change through the year.

Getting there

The entrance is on the corner of Yerebatan Street, opposite Hagia Sophia, a short walk from the Sultanahmet stop of the T1 tram line.
