What to see

Built under Justinian in the 520s–530s, the church has an octagonal domed core inside a square shell, with a two-storey colonnade whose carved capitals and Greek inscription still run around the hall. It became a mosque in the early sixteenth century.

A visit takes 20–30 minutes. It follows prayer times and the usual dress code; the small garden courtyard with its tea house is a peaceful break from the crowds around Sultanahmet.

Walk down from the Hippodrome through the old streets, or combine it with the shore path along the Marmara.

Getting there

About ten minutes on foot downhill from Sultanahmet Square and the Hippodrome.
