Stone circles of carved T-shaped pillars on a hilltop above the Harran plain, raised some 11,000 years ago by hunter-gatherers — long before pottery, writing or farming towns.

What to see

A visitor centre at the car park explains the excavations; a shuttle or a short walk then brings you to the hill, where a light roof shelters the main enclosures. Walkways circle above them, so you look down on the pillars and the foxes, boars, snakes and birds cut into their sides.

Allow an hour and a half on site, plus the drive. Most of the finds, including the larger sculptures, are in the Şanlıurfa Archaeology Museum in town, which is worth seeing the same day.

The hill is exposed and hot from late spring to early autumn: come at opening time. The foreign-visitor ticket also covers Karahantepe, which the ministry currently lists as closed.

Getting there

Göbeklitepe is about 15 km north-east of central Şanlıurfa, off the road to Örencik. Taxis and tours run from the city; there is no regular public bus to the site.
