Driving to Türkiye in your own car
What the customs officer asks for at Kapıkule, İpsala or Sarp, how long your car may stay, the HGS toll tag you need from the first motorway, 2026 tolls and fines, and what to do if you fly home without the car — from the Turkish customs and highway texts.
How long your car may stay
If you are a foreign visitor without a Turkish residence permit, your car may stay as long as you may: 90 days in any 180. The 730 days you read about elsewhere are for Turkish citizens, dual nationals and Blue Card holders who live abroad, and for foreigners with a residence permit.
| Who brings the car | How long it may stay |
|---|---|
| Foreign visitor without a Turkish residence permit | 90 days within any 180 days; days used in the last 180 days are deducted |
| Foreigner with a Turkish residence permit | as long as the permit, at most 730 days |
| Turkish citizen, dual national or Blue Card holder living abroad | up to 730 days |
| Company car brought with a power of attorney | up to 90 days |
You must live abroad: at least 185 days outside Türkiye in the 365 days before you enter, checked again at every entry. Your nationality does not matter. The car must be registered in your name in the country where you live; if you live in the EU or EFTA, a car registered in your name in another EU or EFTA country counts too. One car per person; a trailer or a caravan without an engine may come with it.
Residents of the EU, EFTA and the United Kingdom who do not meet the 185-day rule, or have used up their time, get one month once in every 365 days.
When the time is used up, you and the car must stay outside Türkiye for at least 185 days. Driving out and straight back in does not restart the clock.
Who may drive it: you. Since 14 August 2026 your spouse, parents or children may drive it while you are in Türkiye if they live abroad too; anyone else who lives abroad may drive it only with you in the car. Someone living in Türkiye may not drive it except in an emergency with you on board. The car may not be sold, lent or rented out in Türkiye.
Fines for staying too long (2026)
| Car stays up to 1 month too long | 2,988 TL (≈ €54) |
| Up to 2 months too long | 5,976 TL (≈ €108) |
| Up to 3 months too long | 8,964 TL (≈ €161) |
| More than 3 months too long | a quarter of the car's import duties, and the car is taken out of Türkiye |
Customs fines rise every January with the revaluation rate.
Documents at the border
- the car's registration document, in your name, from the country where you live
- your driving licence
- your passport or national ID card, and where needed proof that you live abroad (a residence permit)
- if the car is not yours: a power of attorney or the rental contract
- motor insurance valid in Türkiye (see below)
Customs registration of the car is free. If you are not the registered owner, bring a power of attorney certified by a notary or a consulate — papers issued by automobile clubs such as ADAC, ÖAMTC or ANWB are accepted too — with a certified Turkish translation. The owner must also live abroad.
Save time at the gate: the car pre-declaration (Taşıt Ön Beyan) can be filed online up to 15 days before you travel. After entry, the customs site YPTİ, which has an English version, shows the date your car must leave by and e-mails reminders.
Driving licence: a licence issued abroad is valid for 6 months from the day you enter. The Turkish rules do not ask for an International Driving Permit; carrying one does no harm.
Insurance: Green Card or a border policy
No valid insurance, no entry. A Green Card covers all of Türkiye, the Asian side included, if the TR box is not crossed out and its dates cover your whole stay. Otherwise you buy short-term Turkish third-party insurance at the border; there is no official price list for it.
Cars registered in Georgia or Kazakhstan get Green Cards through the Azerbaijani bureau; cars from the Gulf states are outside the Green Card system and need the border policy. Iranian Green Cards have not been valid in Türkiye since 1 January 2024. For Russian Green Cards we found no official statement either way: check the TR box and ask your insurer before you set off.
Third-party insurance pays for damage you cause to others, not for your own car.
Border gates for cars
| Turkish gate | Province | Other side |
|---|---|---|
| Kapıkule | Edirne | Kapitan Andreevo · Bulgaria |
| Hamzabeyli | Edirne | Lesovo · Bulgaria |
| Dereköy | Kırklareli | Malko Tarnovo · Bulgaria |
| İpsala | Edirne | Kipi · Greece |
| Pazarkule | Edirne | Kastanies · Greece |
| Sarp | Artvin | Sarpi · Georgia |
| Türkgözü | Ardahan | Vale · Georgia |
| Aktaş | Ardahan | Kartsakhi · Georgia |
All are listed as permanently open on the Trade Ministry's list of 13 May 2026, and the gates to Bulgaria and Greece work around the clock. From 15 June to 15 September the ministry shows live cameras of the Thracian gates on its Trakya customs site; there is no official waiting-time figure for cars. When Kapıkule is busy the ministry itself points to Hamzabeyli, Dereköy, Pazarkule and İpsala.
Motorway and bridge tolls: you need HGS
Toll motorways and bridges charge through HGS, a prepaid tag tied to the number plate; the booths on state-run motorways take no cash or cards. A foreign-plated car must have an HGS account with enough balance. You can open one at the PTT and bank counters at the border gates, at PTT post offices and at Petrol Ofisi, Shell, BP, Opet, TPPD, Total and Aytemiz stations; the sticker tag costs 140 TL (≈ €2.5) plus the balance you load.
Passed a toll without HGS? You have 15 days to open an account, top it up or pay online on the Revenue Administration site (“Yabancı Plakalı Araç Ödemeleri”) with no fine. From day 15 to day 45 you pay the toll twice, after that four times. Unpaid tolls and traffic fines must be settled before the car may leave Türkiye.
Exceptions: the Eurasia Tunnel under the Bosphorus can also be paid on its website or app, foreign plates included, and the 1915 Çanakkale bridge has separate booths for cash and cards.

Traffic rules and 2026 fines
- Speed limits for cars: 50 km/h in towns, 90 on two-way roads, 110 on divided roads, 120 on motorways, unless signs say otherwise. Fines start at 2,000 TL (≈ €36) (6–10 km/h over in town, 11–15 outside) and reach 30,000 TL (≈ €540) with a licence ban.
- Alcohol: 0.5 g/l for private cars, 0.2 for other vehicles; 25,000 TL (≈ €450) and 6 months without a licence.
- Phone in your hand while driving: 5,000 TL (≈ €90). Seatbelt: 2,500 TL (≈ €45) per person. Red light: 5,000 TL (≈ €90).
- Children under 150 cm and 36 kg ride in a child seat; children under 10 may not sit in the front.
- In the car: a fire extinguisher of at least 1 kg, two warning triangles, a spare wheel and a tow rope; snow chains on snowy days.
- Winter tyres from 15 November to 15 April are compulsory only for vehicles carrying passengers or goods commercially; for a private car they are strongly advised in the mountains.
- Cars running on LPG may not enter closed car parks, except shopping-centre car parks certified and signed for them.
Fines paid within 15 days are 25% cheaper. Fines given to a foreign-plated car are collected without a formal notice and must be paid before the car may leave; at the land border gates you can pay by card.
Fuel
On 24 Oct 2026 in İstanbul: petrol (Kurşunsuz 95) 76.30 TL (≈ €1.4) a litre, diesel (Motorin) 96.80 TL (≈ €1.7), LPG (Otogaz) 41.20 TL (≈ €0.7). Diesel costs more than petrol in Türkiye. Pump prices are per litre with tax included and change several times a month.
Flying home without the car
Tell customs before you leave. You have three ways: hand the car over to customs, which stops the clock (it may stay 3 months, extendable by 3); sign a declaration at the nearest customs office; or file the e-declaration on YPTİ. With a declaration the clock keeps running and nobody may drive the car while you are away.
Leaving Türkiye without the car and without telling customs costs 11,952 TL (≈ €215) (2026).
After an accident, repairs are done where customs allows and under its supervision; ask the customs office before handing the car to a garage for long.
Travelling with a dog or cat
Microchip, rabies vaccination after the chip, a rabies antibody test of at least 0.5 IU/ml taken 30 days or more after the vaccination, and a health certificate from your country's vet authority; at most two animals per person.
