What to see

The Ministry page names it after Saint Mercurius, a Roman soldier-saint from Cappadocia, and describes seven levels, three of them cleaned and open. You go in through a Seljuk-period caravanserai known locally as "Develik", and corridors lead from there to rooms and storerooms. The church is far larger than the small chapels of most underground cities, and graves were found in its floor; nearby is a shrine called "Develi Dam" with carvings on the walls of the next room.

Thirty to forty-five minutes; Saratlı Kırkgöz Underground City is in the same village.

Passages are low and narrow, with steep steps — not for anyone uncomfortable in tight spaces.

Getting there

At Saratlı in Gülağaç district, about 20 km north-east of Aksaray town; from Güzelyurt it is about 23 km in a straight line (north-west). By car.
