What to see

The city sits on a hill above the Eşen river. Next to the Roman theatre stand the Harpy Tomb and a sarcophagus on a pillar; across the agora is the Inscribed Pillar. Many of the finest sculptures, including the Nereid Monument, were taken to the British Museum in the nineteenth century.

Allow one and a half to two hours. Together with Letoon it forms one World Heritage site.

There is little shade; summer mornings are best.
