What to see

The Great Mosque of Birgi, built under the Aydınoğulları beylik, is known for its carved wooden pulpit and doors and its tiled prayer niche. Along the stream stand timber-framed houses, the largest of them the painted Çakırağa mansion.

Half a day is enough; stay longer for breakfast in the village square. Bozdağ, with its winter ski slopes and summer plateau, is on the road above.

Spring and autumn are best. Birgi is quiet on weekdays and busier on weekends with visitors from İzmir.

Getting there

About 10 km east of Ödemiş and roughly 110 km from İzmir; minibuses run from Ödemiş, which has buses and trains from İzmir.
