What to see

The walls, largely Roman and medieval with inscriptions and reliefs added over the centuries, ring the old district of Sur. From the stretches near the Mardin Gate and the inner citadel you look over the gardens to the river and the Ten-Eyed Bridge.

Allow two to three hours to walk sections of the walls and the old city inside them, with its churches, mosques and the Hasan Pasha inn.

Late afternoon is the best light. Some sections and towers may be closed for restoration.

Getting there

The walls enclose the Sur district in the centre of Diyarbakır; the airport is about 10 km away.
