What to see

Like the better-known underground cities, Özkonak was dug into the soft tuff as a hiding place; its levels are linked by narrow passages, with ventilation shafts, storage rooms and millstone doors that could be rolled across corridors. Small holes between floors are thought to have been used for communication.

Allow 30–45 minutes. Passages are low and narrow — not for those uncomfortable in tight spaces.

It is a good choice when the southern underground cities are crowded with tour groups.
