What to see

Zelve was a working village until erosion made the cliffs unsafe and residents moved out in the 1950s. Footpaths lead past cave homes, a mill, simple chapels and a small mosque carved into the rock.

Allow one and a half to two hours to walk the valleys. Some paths are steep and a few tunnels require scrambling, so bring good shoes and water.

Late afternoon light turns the rock walls pink and gold. The ticket also covers Paşabağ, a short drive back towards Göreme.

Getting there

Zelve is about 5 km north-east of Göreme, off the road to Avanos; there is no regular public transport to the gate, so go by taxi, bike or tour.
