What to see

A marked path leads round the walls, gates, houses and the great trench dug by the first excavators, with panels explaining which of the nine main layers you are looking at. The ramp of Troy II and the sloping walls of Troy VI are the highlights; a modern wooden horse stands near the entrance.

Allow an hour and a half on the mound. The ticket includes the Troy Museum, a few minutes' walk away, which you need to make sense of the site — plan three hours for both.

The site is small and open: come in the morning, and bring a hat in summer.

Getting there

About 30 km south-west of Çanakkale near Tevfikiye; minibuses run from the Çanakkale minibus station by the river.
