What to see
Settled from the Neolithic, the city became a colony of Miletus and was famous for its harbours, temple, theatre, wine, olive oil, marble, coins and perfumes. After Lydia fell in 546 BC it passed to the Persians, the Macedonians and Rome. Locally the site is known as Belkıs or Balkız.
The city spread over a wide area north of the marsh between the Erdek and Bandırma gulfs; today its ruins are scattered across the fields.
Visiting arrangements for the site are not published on an primary page we could read.
