What to see

The old town of Yusufeli was flooded by the reservoir of the Yusufeli dam and a new town was built higher up. The side valleys still lead to Georgian churches such as those at Barhal and İşhan, and on to the villages of Yaylalar and Olgunlar at the foot of the Kaçkar range.

A day for the churches and valleys, or several days as a trekking base.

The river was long known for rafting; after the dam the rafting stretches and operators have changed, so ask locally before planning around it.

Getting there

About 70 km south of Artvin by road; minibuses run from Artvin and Erzurum.
