What to see

Ani was a great city of the Middle Ages; today its churches, a cathedral, a mosque and long city walls stand alone on open grassland above the Arpaçay gorge, which is the border.

Allow two to three hours; the site is large and exposed, and in winter snow can cover the paths, so wrap up and check the weather.

Most people visit from Kars; it is often combined with a trip on the Eastern Express.

About 45 km east of Kars by road; there is no scheduled public transport that we have checked.
