What to see

A steep lane climbs from the river to the gate; inside the walls there is little left but ramparts and towers, and the reason to come is the view over the grid of Russian-era stone houses, the gorge and the plateau beyond.

Half an hour to an hour. Below the castle, the old stone bridge, the Ottoman bathhouses by the river and the tenth-century Church of the Holy Apostles (now a mosque) make a short walk.

Late afternoon light on the dark stone is best. In winter the lanes are icy and the wind on top is bitter.

Getting there

On the north side of the Kars old town, a 15–20 minute walk from the centre; the last part is uphill.
