What to see

Most visitors enjoy Ararat from below: from Ishak Pasha Palace, from the road between Doğubayazıt and Iğdır, or from the plain at sunrise, when the twin peaks of Great and Little Ararat stand clear.

The mountain is a special military zone. The UK government's travel advice says climbing needs a permit from the Doğubayazıt government office and a fee; climbs are usually organised through licensed agencies over several days in summer.

The best months for clear views are late spring to early autumn; the summit is snow-covered all year.

Getting there

Doğubayazıt, at the foot of the mountain, is about 3 hours by road from Van; the nearest airports are Ağrı and Iğdır.
