What to see

The palace was built over nearly a century by a family of local governors. Beyond the monumental carved gate come the courtyards, the harem, a mosque with its dome and minaret, a bathhouse and a kitchen; much of the stonework has been restored and parts are roofed over.

Allow an hour and a half. The ruins of the old fortress and a small mosque on the rocks above give the best view back over the palace and the plain.

Closed on Mondays. Clear mornings give the best chance of seeing Ararat free of cloud.

Getting there

About 6 km east of Doğubayazıt up a hill road; taxis and minibuses from the town. Doğubayazıt is about 3 hours by road north-east of Van.
