An ancient town on the Tigris that was flooded by the Ilısu dam in 2020; its monuments were moved to a new site above the lake, where a museum tells its story.

What to see

Most of the old town, with its cave dwellings, bridge piers and markets, now lies under the reservoir. Several monuments — the tomb of Zeynel Bey, a hamam, gates and mosques — were lifted whole and moved to the cultural park near the new town, and the museum shows the finds of the excavations.

Allow about two hours for the museum and the moved monuments. Closed on Mondays.

Boats on the lake pass the tip of the old citadel rock, which still rises above the water.

Getting there

About 40 km north of Midyat and 37 km south-east of Batman, by car or minibus.
