What to see

Guided visits usually take in the courtyards, the underground chamber that was once a sun temple, the main church with its carved altar and the rooms of the old patriarchate.

Allow about an hour. It is a working monastery: visits stop for services, and modest dress is expected.

Combine it with Mardin old town on the same day; late afternoon light on the stone is lovely.
