What to see

Start at the Zincirli Bedesten and wander through the coppersmiths' bazaar, where metalworkers still hammer trays and pots, and on to the restored stone inns with their courtyards. Spice, pepper-paste and pistachio shops fill the side streets.

Food is the other reason to come: kebabs cooked over charcoal, lahmacun, beyran soup at breakfast and, above all, pistachio baklava. Give yourself a long afternoon and an evening.

Shops close early on Sundays and during religious holidays; mornings are the liveliest time in the markets.

In the old centre of Gaziantep, around the castle mound; walkable from most central hotels.
