What to see

The water is too alkaline for most fish — only the pearl mullet (inci kefali), which swims up the rivers each spring to spawn, lives in it. The shore road links Van, Gevaş and the Akdamar pier, Tatvan under Nemrut volcano, and Ahlat with its Seljuk tombstones.

A drive round the southern and western shores between Van and Ahlat takes a full day with stops; the whole circuit needs two.

Summer is the time to swim from the beaches near Van and Edremit. Spring brings the mullet migration and almond blossom on Akdamar.

Getting there

Van city lies on the eastern shore (Van Ferit Melen airport); Tatvan on the western shore has a railway station and a train ferry across the lake.
