What to see

At over 2,100 metres, an artificial cone of loose stones covers the king's tomb. On the east and west terraces the huge statues sit headless, their heads lined up on the ground in front of them, with eagles, lions and reliefs of the king shaking hands with the gods.

Allow two hours at the top, plus the drive; the last stretch from the car park is a steep walk of about 15–20 minutes. The ticket also includes the royal site of Arsameia on the way up.

The ministry opens the summit early for sunrise and the page notes that hours follow sunrise and sunset. It is cold and windy at dawn even in August; from about November to April the road is often closed by snow.

Getting there

From Kahta (Adıyaman) it is about 50 km by road; from Malatya the northern approach ends near the summit. Most visitors come on a sunrise or sunset tour from Kahta, Malatya or Şanlıurfa.
