One of the great oracle sanctuaries of the ancient world: a vast, never-finished Temple of Apollo, the third-largest Ionic temple anywhere and one of the best preserved.

What to see

A double ring of columns surrounded an open courtyard that held a small inner shrine and a sacred spring, where Apollo's prophecies were given. The Persians destroyed the first temple; its successor was never completed, and in Christian times a church was built in the courtyard. Excavated in 1906–1913 and partly re-erected, it is famous for its giant column bases and the carved head of Medusa.

Allow an hour; the steps into the courtyard and the sheer height of the walls are the highlight.

In the Hisar quarter of Didim, about 3.5 km north of Altınkum beach (straight line).
