Labraunda — Sanctuary of Zeus

What to see

Mausolus and his brother Idrieus, the rulers of Caria, turned an older shrine into a monumental sanctuary: a temple of Zeus, gateways, stoas and two large banqueting halls (andrones). A paved sacred way once climbed here from Mylasa, the modern Milas. Swedish archaeologists began excavating in 1948, and an international team carries on the work.

One to one and a half hours; the terraces are linked by stairs, and the view over the valley is part of the visit.

The access road climbs steeply with sharp bends; take it slowly, and avoid it in poor weather.

Getting there

In the hills about 12 km north of Milas (straight line), reached by a narrow mountain road. From Bodrum it is about 55 km in a straight line.
